Lutsharel Geertruida is beginning to look like one of those summer transfer stories that gathers pace quietly before suddenly becoming unavoidable.
TeamTalk report that Liverpool, Leeds United, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have all monitored the RB Leipzig defender, who has impressed during his loan spell at Sunderland. With the 25-year-old not expected to stay at the Stadium of Light despite a €23m, around £20m, option, the market is opening.
Liverpool’s interest is easy to understand. Geertruida can play right-back, right-sided centre-back and left-sided centre-back, which makes him exactly the sort of defender modern elite clubs covet.
TeamTalk state that Liverpool explored a January move, though it was “never realistically available” at that stage. That detail matters. It suggests this is not a sudden name pulled from a summer shortlist, but a player already discussed within Anfield recruitment circles.
For Arne Slot, there is also obvious familiarity. Geertruida thrived at Feyenoord, where his blend of tactical intelligence, physical strength and technical calm made him a key figure.
Leeds United’s interest adds intrigue. TeamTalk report that their connection to the Red Bull football network could help communication with RB Leipzig. That may not decide the transfer, but in a crowded race, relationships matter.
Leeds need defensive reinforcement, and Geertruida’s Premier League adaptation at Sunderland strengthens his case. He is no longer a player being judged only on Eredivisie form or European potential. He has handled English football’s rhythm, pressure and physical demands.
As one source view from the report suggests, “Those close to the player believe he is now ready for the next major step in his career.”
There is also overseas interest from Italy, Germany, France and Spain, making this more than a Premier League tug of war. Geertruida has club experience, international pedigree and positional flexibility, all at a price that feels reasonable in the current market.
For Liverpool, the question is whether admiration becomes action. For Leeds, it is whether opportunity can become advantage.
From a Liverpool fan’s point of view, Geertruida feels like a very sensible name, perhaps almost too sensible to ignore. He is not the glamour signing some supporters may demand, but he ticks boxes that matter across a long season.
Liverpool need defenders who can solve more than one problem. Ongoing RB issues, Joe Gomez’s fitness record, Ibrahima Konaté’s contract uncertainty and Virgil van Dijk’s age profile all make defensive planning essential. Geertruida would not necessarily arrive as a guaranteed starter, but he could give Slot something Liverpool have lacked too often, genuine tactical cover without a major drop-off.
The Leeds angle is interesting, but Liverpool should not be losing out on a player they genuinely want because another club has a network connection. If the recruitment team believe he can step into Slot’s system, this is exactly the type of £20m deal that can look clever within 12 months.
The concern is whether Liverpool are monitoring again when they should be moving. Supporters have seen too many “admired” players end up elsewhere. Geertruida may not be the headline transfer of the summer, but he could be one of the smartest.
