Leeds United Face £42m Igor Paixao Decision After Marseille Set Firm Asking Price

Leeds United’s search for attacking reinforcements has hit another significant hurdle, with Marseille understood to be holding out for around £42 million for Igor Paixao. According to Foot Mercato, the Brazilian winger features on Leeds’ shortlist, but any move currently looks complicated by the size of the valuation and the player’s place in the club’s wider recruitment plans.

The development follows disappointment over Julian Brandt, who had been admired by Leeds before Ajax moved quickly to secure him on a free transfer after his Borussia Dortmund contract expired. That outcome forced Leeds back into the market and appears to have accelerated work on alternative options for the wide areas.

Paixao is a name familiar to Leeds decision-makers, having been linked with the club previously. His profile makes sense on paper. He is direct, productive and has experience across two major European leagues after spells in the Netherlands and France. Even so, the finances are the central issue. Marseille are under pressure to raise funds with UEFA keeping watch over the club’s financial position after regulatory breaches. Several exits have already taken place, including Mason Greenwood, Hamed Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Paixao is among the players who could generate a substantial fee.

That does not automatically make him attainable. Marseille owner Franck McCourt is reported to have placed a €50 million valuation on the winger, roughly £42 million, which is said to be well above what Leeds would currently prefer to commit. The gap is believed to be in the region of €15 million to €20 million, a sizeable difference for a club trying to balance ambition with discipline.

Marseille stance shaped by contract and investment

Marseille’s position is strengthened by the fact Paixao only joined from Feyenoord last summer in a £30 million deal and still has four years remaining on his contract. There is no immediate need for the French club to compromise unless market conditions shift or a buyer moves closer to their demands.

For Leeds, that creates a familiar transfer dilemma. Do they stretch for a target viewed as high level, or pivot towards a more accessible option? The suggestion that Paixao is only a third-choice target adds another layer, because clubs are often reluctant to overpay if a player is not at the very top of their list.

From a Leeds United perspective, this feels like one of those links that is exciting for obvious reasons but also comes with a big reality check. Igor Paixao has the kind of output and attacking spark that would lift the level of the squad, and if Leeds are serious about competing strongly in the Premier League, these are the calibre of names supporters want to hear.

The concern is the price. £42 million is a huge sum, especially for a club that needs smart depth across more than one position. Fans will understandably ask whether that money could be spread more effectively, particularly if Paixao is not even the first choice target. Recruitment has to be sharp, not emotional.

At the same time, there is a strong argument that top quality costs real money. Leeds have missed out on one target already, and supporters will not want to see the club hesitate repeatedly before ending up with a lesser option late in the window. If the staff believe Paixao can make the jump and produce in England, then there is a case for pushing hard, while still trying to negotiate the fee down.

The dream scenario for fans is clear, Leeds stay ambitious, stay organised and land an attacker who can genuinely change games at Premier League level. Paixao looks capable of being that type of signing. The question is whether the numbers can be brought into a range that makes the risk feel worthwhile.
