Liverpool Transfer Latest: Ezri Konsa Interest Makes Sense, But £60m Feels Steep

Liverpool are being linked with Ezri Konsa, and on the face of it, the logic is easy enough to follow. Andoni Iraola has walked into a squad that still needs defensive certainty, even after the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60 million. Jacquet is young, highly regarded and clearly seen as part of the future, but clubs chasing major honours rarely leave themselves with one obvious plan.

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are in the mix for the Aston Villa defender, with Arsenal also keen. Konsa is not agitating for a move, though he is apparently open to one, and that matters. There is a difference between availability and active pursuit, and smart clubs know it.

Ezri Konsa Fits Liverpool Need

Konsa ticks obvious boxes. He is 28, Premier League proven, tactically flexible and reliable. He can play centre-back and fill in at right-back, which is useful for a Liverpool side still trying to settle that area of the pitch after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure last summer. If Iraola wants more than one defensive shape, Konsa gives him that without forcing a complete rethink.

Villa valuing him at £60 million is where it gets difficult. That is a serious fee for a player with two years left on his deal, even in an inflated market. Liverpool may admire him, but admiration and writing the cheque are separate issues. Arsenal, meanwhile, are reportedly interested too, though whether they go to that number is another question entirely.

Aston Villa Hold Strong Position

From Villa’s perspective, there is no obvious pressure to sell. Konsa has been central to Unai Emery’s side, and after exits involving Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, allowing another established figure to go would further weaken the spine of the team. That pushes the price up and reduces room for negotiation.

For Liverpool, this may come down to how much they trust Jacquet straight away, and whether they believe versatility is worth premium money. Konsa has been described as “one of the best defenders in English football” and “excellent”, and there is enough evidence to understand why. The question is simpler than the praise, do Liverpool need him badly enough at £60 million?

Our View

As a Liverpool supporter, this is the sort of report that sounds sensible until you get to the number. Konsa is a good defender. No argument there. He is experienced, calm, and can cover more than one position. All useful. But £60 million for a 28-year-old who is not elite on the ball and is not some transformational signing feels like the kind of move you regret two windows later.

Iraola does need options. That much is obvious. Last season exposed a lack of balance and depth in too many areas, and the defence needs sorting properly. But there is a big difference between improving the squad and overpaying because a player looks convenient. Liverpool have already invested heavily in Jacquet, and if the plan is for him to start, then another massive fee at centre-back feels hard to justify.

The right-back angle is interesting, but if you are buying a defender mainly because he can help patch another role, that should set alarm bells ringing. Liverpool should be signing the best specialist they can, not spending £60 million on flexibility alone. If Villa drop the price, fair enough, it becomes a more serious discussion. At the current valuation, it feels more like market noise than a move that truly adds up.
