Liverpool Eye Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo as Guehi Alternative

Centre-Back Search Takes New Direction

Liverpool’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements appears to have taken a decisive turn following the collapse of their move for Marc Guehi. According to e-Noticies, the Reds have identified Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo as a prime target, with a deal worth around €50m being considered.

The failed Guehi transfer was one of the most dramatic sagas of the summer. “All was sorted, a fee, a contract, the medical,” the report explains, but Crystal Palace refused to sanction the move after failing to find a replacement. The decision leaves Liverpool in a tricky position, as Guehi is now likely to attract interest from abroad in January, with Real Madrid reportedly leading the race.

Araujo Seen as Perfect Fit

E-Noticies claim Liverpool have already made enquiries about Araujo and view him as an ideal solution to their defensive needs. His athleticism, physical presence and ability to play in a high line make him well suited to Arne Slot’s style.

The report adds that former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suárez has spoken to Araujo about a move, reportedly encouraging him to consider Anfield as a positive step in his career.

Homegrown Factor Still an Issue

While Araujo would provide world-class quality, the lack of a homegrown status means Liverpool would still need to seek English-qualified players in other areas of the pitch to balance the squad. This may yet bring Palace back into negotiations for a different player.

Contract Timelines Add Pressure

With Joe Gomez’s long-term future under review and Ibrahima Konaté’s contract expiring next July, Liverpool’s urgency to secure a reliable centre-back is increasing. Araujo would represent a significant investment but could offer stability in a key position for years to come.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

Spending €50m on a non-homegrown player when the club is already close to its quota raises questions about squad balance. The Guehi deal felt like a perfect solution because it ticked the homegrown box as well as adding a player entering his peak years. Araujo may be a top-class defender, but will Barcelona even sell him easily? They are notorious for driving a hard bargain and that fee could quickly rise if multiple clubs get involved.

Fans are also wary of missing out on Guehi entirely, especially if he signs a pre-contract with Real Madrid. That would represent a failure of planning given Liverpool had him within their grasp. Some will argue that €50m could be invested in a younger, homegrown defender who would fit both the tactical and registration needs. Still, Araujo’s quality is undeniable and if he were to arrive at Anfield, he would immediately raise the level of the back line. The key will be whether Liverpool can strike early and avoid another drawn-out saga that risks leaving them short again next summer.
