King Kenny Documentary Set for Big Screen Release

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish is about to receive the big-screen treatment in a new documentary directed by Asif Kapadia – the acclaimed filmmaker behind Amy, Diego Maradona and Senna. As reported by the Daily Mail, the film is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on 29 October before becoming available on Amazon Prime the following week.

Dalglish Celebrated On and Off the Pitch

The documentary promises to shine a light not only on Dalglish’s glittering playing career but also on his impact away from football. Kapadia explained: “Dalglish was my hero as a kid and I had his picture on my wall where I grew up. I wanted to make this film for people like me who remember Kenny as a player, the Celtic, Liverpool and Scottish fans.”

Dalglish’s legendary partnership with Liverpool is well-documented, but the film also underlines his leadership during some of the most challenging moments in the city’s history. Kapadia added: “But also for my kids’ generation who only know Kenny from playing Fifa. They know the name but they have never seen how good he was as a player or, more importantly, what he did off the pitch for the people of Liverpool. Kenny was the leader who always stepped up.”

Interviews with Familiar Faces

The documentary will feature insights from the Dalglish family, alongside former teammates Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen. Their presence adds depth, ensuring viewers experience not only Dalglish’s sporting brilliance but also the personal values that defined his legacy.

Cultural Importance of Dalglish’s Story

Dalglish remains a symbol of resilience, humility and leadership. For football fans, particularly those of Liverpool and Celtic, his influence continues to resonate. A cinematic portrayal of his story feels long overdue, especially given Kapadia’s track record of humanising icons across sport and culture.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

For Liverpool supporters, this documentary will be much more than a trip down memory lane. It represents a chance to relive the story of a man who was not only a world-class player and manager but also a figure who embodied the spirit of the club and the city.

Fans will welcome the fact that Kapadia, someone with proven ability to capture the essence of iconic figures, is the director. His words about wanting the younger generation to “see how good he was as a player” will strike a chord. Many modern fans know Dalglish only as a club ambassador or as a face from Fifa, yet his footballing brilliance deserves wider recognition.

What will particularly resonate with the Anfield faithful is the focus on Dalglish’s role beyond the game. His leadership after the Hillsborough disaster and his ongoing commitment to the community mark him out as a figure whose importance transcends football. That, perhaps more than his goals or trophies, is why he remains known as ‘King Kenny’.

The release feels perfectly timed. In an era where football increasingly feels commercialised, this documentary offers a reminder of authenticity, loyalty and human connection. Supporters will no doubt treat its premiere as an event in itself, and for many, watching Dalglish’s story told on the big screen will feel like a proud celebration of Liverpool’s history and identity.
