Cody Gakpo Transfer Latest: Liverpool Forward Linked With Summer Exit

Gakpo Future Becomes Major Liverpool Question

Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool future has become one of the more intriguing strands of the summer window, with Soccer News reporting that the Dutch forward has informed the club of his desire to leave Anfield.

The 27-year-old arrived from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and was an important figure in Liverpool’s 2024/25 title winning season, scoring 18 goals and adding seven assists. That campaign appeared to underline his value, versatility and maturity in a squad built around intelligent movement rather than fixed positions.

Yet football has a habit of changing quickly. After signing a new contract in September 2025, Gakpo’s numbers dipped. Nine goals and six assists across 3,596 minutes and 52 matches represents a useful contribution, though perhaps not enough for a forward expected to shape decisive moments consistently.

Tottenham Interest Adds Premier League Twist

According to the report, Tottenham Hotspur retain “serious interest” in Gakpo, with Roberto De Zerbi said to admire the player as part of his rebuild. That makes sense from Spurs’ perspective. Gakpo can play from the left, operate centrally and combine physical presence with technical security.

For Liverpool, however, the question is more complicated. Andoni Iraola’s arrival could offer Gakpo a fresh tactical platform. A coach who values pressing, aggression and attacking variety may yet see qualities in him that were not fully maximised during a difficult season.

That said, if the player has genuinely made his position clear, Liverpool must decide whether persuasion or pragmatism is the better route.

Value Gives Liverpool Strong Position

Gakpo’s contract runs until 2030, which places Liverpool in a position of strength. Bayern Munich have previously been linked, although their move for PSV Eindhoven’s Ismael Saibari rules them out of the race. Newcastle United have also been mentioned, but Tottenham appear the club with the clearest reported interest.

Summer Decision Could Shape Iraola Era

This is exactly the sort of decision that defines a new manager’s early period. Keep Gakpo and Iraola inherits a technically gifted forward with proven Premier League pedigree. Sell him and Liverpool could reinvest in a player better suited to the new manager’s attacking demands.

Either way, Gakpo’s future now feels less like background noise and more like a genuine summer storyline.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s point of view, this is one of those reports that lands with a mix of frustration and curiosity. Gakpo has never been a bad player for Liverpool. Far from it. He has delivered important goals, shown intelligence across the front line and contributed to a title winning side.

The issue is whether he has ever truly felt indispensable. At his best, he looks elegant, composed and tactically useful. At his quietest, matches can drift around him. That is dangerous territory at Liverpool, especially under a new manager who will want intensity, clarity and a sharper identity.

If Tottenham are serious, Liverpool should not panic. A contract until 2030 means there is no need to accept a soft fee. Anything around the €60m mark would need proper consideration, particularly if Iraola already has a different profile in mind.

Supporters may also wonder whether this is another case of a good player arriving at the wrong time, in the wrong tactical cycle. Gakpo has quality, but Liverpool now need certainty. If his “clear desire” is to leave, the club’s response should be equally clear, pay the right fee or move on.
