Andre Onana’s Manchester United career appears to be edging towards a quiet, unresolved ending. According to reporting by The Daily Mail, the Cameroon international is now in talks over a permanent exit, with his representatives holding discussions with Inter Milan about a potential return this summer. For a player once signed to be the modern symbol of Erik ten Hag’s rebuild, it feels like another chapter in United’s recent cycle of costly resets.
Daily Mail Sport reports that Onana’s agents are currently in Milan, where they have “discussed the possibility of Onana moving back to the San Siro.” It is a striking turn for a goalkeeper who arrived at Old Trafford for £47.2million, billed as a transformational presence with his distribution and Champions League pedigree.
Onana is currently on loan at Trabzonspor after losing his place as United’s No1 to Senne Lammens, who arrived from Royal Antwerp in September. While his United career has stalled, his form in Turkey has been more convincing. The article notes that Onana has “lost just three of his 16 games on loan to put Trabzonspor in third place in the Super Lig table.”

That resurgence has not gone unnoticed. Inter are now considering him as a possible replacement for Yann Sommer, reopening a door that once felt firmly closed. It is a reminder that context matters, and that players written off in one environment can look revitalised in another.
Onana’s reputation in Milan remains strong. During his single season with Inter in 2022-23, he helped them reach the Champions League final, “losing narrowly to Manchester City in Istanbul,” while also winning the Italian Cup and Super Cup. That success was central to United’s decision to sign him.
The emotional pull is still there too. It is understood that Onana “still owns a property in Milan,” a small detail that underlines how connected he remains to the city and the club. For Inter, this is not just a football decision, but a familiar relationship that once delivered silverware.
Despite the interest, complications remain. Onana has “two-and-a-half years left on his contract at Old Trafford,” meaning United would likely need to negotiate a payoff to make any deal workable. Wages are also described as a potential stumbling block, especially after he received a pay rise to join Trabzonspor.
For United, this is another expensive lesson. They bought Onana to fix a problem, only to create a new one. A permanent exit may be the cleanest option, but it will almost certainly come at a financial cost.
From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, this situation feels depressingly familiar. Another high-profile signing, another expensive solution that never quite fit, and another summer where the club must absorb losses to move forward. Onana’s story is not just about form, it is about structure, decision-making and whether United truly understand what they need from key positions.
Many fans will point out that Onana did not suddenly forget how to play. His Inter performances proved his quality at elite level. The problem at United has often been environment rather than individual. A lack of stability, constant tactical shifts and pressure that turns every mistake into a headline can erode confidence quickly, especially for a goalkeeper.
There is also frustration that United appear to be stuck in a loop. Buy to fix, sell to repair, repeat. If Onana returns to Inter and rediscovers his best form, it will only sharpen the sense that United are not maximising talent. Supporters want to see a clearer plan, where recruitment and coaching align with long-term identity rather than short-term firefighting.
For many fans, this feels less like a personal failure for Onana and more like another symptom of a club still searching for coherence.
