Underperforming Milan star Santiago Gimenez could reportedly stay at the club beyond the summer despite an underwhelming season. According to Calciomercato, the Mexican striker could be given an unexpected opportunity to steer his stuttering San Siro career back on track.

Milan signed Gimenez from Feyenoord in February 2025 for a reported fee of €32 million, hoping he would increase the team’s firepower. However, the 2025/26 season was an unmitigated disaster for the 25-year-old. Marred by a long-term injury, he made just 16 Serie A appearances, failing to find the net, though he registered two assists.

Gimenez’s lackluster form has sparked rumors about his future, yet Milan may not go for a sale this summer. Instead, new manager Ruben Amorim could try to revive the Mexican’s career, even though the Rossoneri are likely to sign a new center-forward this summer.

Our take on Milan & Gimenez

Despite traveling to North America as part of Javier Aguirre’s World Cup squad, Gimenez has barely featured for Mexico so far. Indeed, the Milan flop has made just ten minutes in the opening two matches, with the veteran coach preferring Raul Jimenez over him.

Gimenez’s bit-part role in the national team perhaps best illustrates the depth of his struggle. Still, let’s not forget that he joined Milan as one of the most prolific strikers in European football. Unfortunately, he has failed to settle at San Siro, but Amorim’s arrival could be just what the doctor ordered.

There could be plenty of space for Gimenez in the Portuguese tactician’s 3-4-2-1 setup. Moreover, it feels like he enjoys playing as a lone striker, so it makes sense for Milan to give him one last chance to rescue his career in Serie A.
