The Inter vice-captain has divided opinion among Nerazzurri supporters this season.

His goal return has been modest, just one strike, against Cremonese back in October, though his six assists demonstrate he remains an influential figure in Chivu’s midfield.

Some fans feel Barella’s peak years are behind him. Others defend him fiercely.

What is beyond dispute is that his profile continues to attract attention at the highest level.

Newcastle’s interest is rooted in a specific ambition.

The Magpies dream of recreating the Italy midfield axis by pairing Barella with Sandro Tonali at St James’ Park.

Manchester United’s interest is perhaps more opportunistic.

Under Michael Carrick, the club has stabilised and Champions League qualification now looks achievable.

A return to Europe’s top table would likely trigger significant investment, and a battle-hardened, experienced midfielder like Barella, particularly following Casemiro’s exit, fits the profile of what United need.

For now, however, Barella himself has given no indication he wants to leave.

He is committed to Inter and to Chivu’s project, with his contract running until 2029. The Premier League clubs will watch and wait, but prising him away from the Nerazzurri will be no easy task.
