It was rather well-reported that FC Barcelona would be looking to strengthen some key areas of their team in this summer transfer window, but still, the Blaugranes surprised the world by the speed with which they wrapped up one of the most exciting players from the Premier League, i.e., the winger Anthony Gordon.

The Catalans arrived at an agreement with Newcastle United to get the player in exchange for €70 million fixed and another €10 million in variables.

However, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, getting the player was not really easy, and might not even have been possible without the Englishman’s own clear stance on the matter.

A few weeks ago, Gordon himself was not expecting an approach from Barcelona, especially as he believed Marcus Rashford would continue at the Catalan club after his good season on loan. However, when he came to know of Deco’s interest in him, he was ecstatic, and dropped entertaining interest from any other side.

And this interest was also not inconsiderable, as it came from some of the other biggest clubs in Europe. Bayern Munich had been linked with him for a considerable period of time, but with the player’s clear desire to play for the Blaugrana side, their pursuit took a back seat.

However, competition was still stiff, as Liverpool made a late push to get the player, especially after they pulled out of negotiations for Yan Diomade. This offer was more appealing for Newcastle, as the Merseyside club was willing to offer up to €85 million for the winger.

Meanwhile, it would also have been quite difficult for Gordon himself to reject them, as he himself, his family, and his agent are all from Liverpool.

However, Anthony Gordon stood firm, and told his agents that he would either join Barcelona, or stay put at Newcastle United. The Magpies, who missed out on UCL, and thus were looking to offload him, were thus forced to accept the offer from the Blaugranes.
