The FC Barcelona frontline of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal was one of the most exciting and fearsome attacking lines in Europe this season, and all three of these players had a very good season.

Raphinha and Yamal are expected to keep up their performances for the next season as well, but there have been some doubts about Lewandowski, as he will be 37 years of age by the start of the next season, an age at which very few players can keep playing at the highest level in Europe.

As a result, the Catalans have been linked with some exciting younger forwards in the last few weeks and months, one of them being the Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, who has had an excellent season at the Portuguese club, Sporting Portugal. His release clause of €75 million is also rather affordable for a player of his quality.

However, Barcelona will not be making any move for a striker, either Gyokeres or someone else. Deco made this clear as he spoke to the media at a recent event in Portugal. In this regard, the Sporting Director said:

“Gyökeres is a great striker who has done excellent things at Sporting, but right now we are not looking for that position. We have Lewandowski as our number 9.”

Reasons for continued reliance on Robert Lewandowski

As SPORT has reported, the main reason for not looking to sign another striker is that the Catalans want a new left-winger, which will free up Raphinha to play centrally at times to give the Pole a rest. Thus, Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford remain more regularly linked with the Blaugrana club.

Furthermore, by playing more than 55% of games, he has also ensured another year of stay at the Catalan club. The Polish veteran has had his best season with the Catalan side as he scored 42 goals in 52 games, and Hansi Flick’s arrival has allowed him to perform at his best level despite his advancing age.

Therefore, Lewandowski will continue to remain the starting centre-forward for Barcelona next season, and a decision on further contract extension or the signing of a new forward will be made only next year.
