If Tottenham have already “accepted the defender wanted to leave north London this summer”, then supporters are entitled to ask how the club reached this point again. It is not only about losing a quality centre-back, it is about the pattern. A key player wants out, a deal drags, other clubs circle, and Spurs are left looking reactive rather than in control.

De Zerbi’s line about wanting “to respect the will of the players” is understandable, but fans also want to see Tottenham respected in the market. If Romero goes, the replacement has to be immediate, high calibre and suited to leading the back line from day one. Selling a player of this level for €40million would also invite scrutiny, given the premium attached to proven defenders with his pedigree.
