Manchester City are preparing to open talks with Josko Gvardiol over a new long-term contract as interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich intensifies ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to the original source, TEAMtalk, both European giants have already made contact with the defender’s representatives to explore his situation at the Etihad Stadium. It underlines just how highly Gvardiol is now regarded across the continent after another commanding season under Pep Guardiola.
The Croatia international has become one of Manchester City’s most dependable figures since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2023. Comfortable at centre-back and equally effective on the left side of defence, he has developed into the sort of modern defender every elite side covets. Strong in possession, aggressive in duels and calm under pressure, Gvardiol fits naturally into Guardiola’s demanding tactical structure.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are both searching for long-term defensive solutions and see the 24-year-old as a player capable of anchoring their back lines for years to come. His versatility is particularly attractive given the demands placed on defenders at the highest level of the European game.

Manchester City are understood to be relaxed about the situation despite the growing noise surrounding the player’s future. Gvardiol remains under contract until 2028 and the club are now looking to strengthen their position further with improved terms.
The move reflects City’s wider squad planning strategy under sporting director Hugo Viana. The Premier League champions are keen to secure the futures of their core players early rather than allow uncertainty to build around the dressing room.
Pep Guardiola has already made his feelings clear regarding Gvardiol’s importance to the side. Ahead of City’s clash with Brentford, the manager said: “I have no info. I would love Gvardiol to stay here. It is not easy to find a player like him so hopefully he can stay.”
That statement carried weight. Guardiola does not often hand out public endorsements lightly, particularly when transfer speculation is swirling around a player. In Gvardiol, he sees a footballer capable of shaping Manchester City’s defence for the next decade.
City also recognise that defenders with his technical quality and physical presence are becoming increasingly rare. Replacing him would not simply be expensive, it would be strategically difficult.
Real Madrid’s interest comes as little surprise. The Spanish giants are continuing to reshape their squad with an emphasis on younger elite-level talent who can dominate European football over the long term. Gvardiol fits that profile perfectly.
The club have already built a core around emerging stars and believe the Croatian would add further balance to their defensive options. His ability to operate centrally or out wide would provide flexibility in multiple systems.
Bayern Munich are equally determined to strengthen their defence after a season in which inconsistency at the back has cost them at key moments. The Bundesliga champions have monitored Gvardiol for several years and remain convinced he has the mentality and quality required to thrive in Germany once again.
For now, however, Manchester City hold the advantage. Gvardiol is settled in England, trusted by Guardiola and playing regularly in a side that continues to compete for every major trophy available.
Gvardiol is currently recovering from the fractured leg injury he suffered earlier this year, although reports suggest his rehabilitation is progressing positively.
Manchester City expect him to return before the end of the domestic campaign, which would provide a major boost during the closing weeks of the season. The defender is also expected to link up with Croatia for this summer’s World Cup finals once fully fit.
There is a growing sense that City’s hierarchy want to remove any possibility of a prolonged transfer saga before it develops further. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich may admire the player, but Manchester City are intent on building around him rather than cashing in.
That determination says everything about Gvardiol’s standing at the Etihad Stadium. Elite clubs across Europe may be circling, yet Manchester City still believe the defender’s best years will arrive in sky blue.
