Manchester United have reignited interest in Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to a report by The Telegraph. The Italian international, who has just 12 months left on his current deal, could be available should PSG receive a suitable offer. While the Ligue 1 giants are content to retain Donnarumma, they’re not ruling out a sale—especially as they edge closer to sealing a deal for Lille’s Lucas Chevalier.
“PSG are in the process of signing goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille and the European champions are thought to be braced for United renewing their interest in Donnarumma once that deal is complete,” the report reads.
United’s renewed pursuit appears to be prompted by mounting uncertainty around Andre Onana’s fitness. The Cameroon international, who had a turbulent first season, is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and is in a race against time to be fit for the Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17.
“Onana made a number of errors last season and Amorim has been looking to strengthen in the goalkeeper department,” the report continues.

The Telegraph also reveals that United recently approached Aston Villa to discuss a potential loan move for World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez, but were “rebuffed by the Midlands club.”
At 26, Donnarumma represents both pedigree and potential longevity. His commanding presence, big-game experience, and age profile make him a compelling target. United’s interest earlier this summer hints that the club see him as a genuine option, not just a short-term fix while Onana recovers.
“United also remain interested in adding a goalkeeper before the close of the transfer window,” states the article, reinforcing that this is an ongoing strategic priority rather than a knee-jerk reaction.
With time still on the clock in the transfer window, a formal move from United could be imminent—particularly if PSG finalise their new arrival.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, the potential move for Donnarumma makes a lot of sense. After a shaky debut season from Onana—highlighted by lapses in concentration and several costly errors—there’s little room for patience at the top level. A club of United’s stature can’t afford uncertainty between the posts, especially with ambitions of closing the gap to Manchester City and Arsenal.
The pursuit of Donnarumma feels proactive, not panicked. Bringing in a 26-year-old goalkeeper who has already won the Euros and the Champions League he would be a statement signing. His distribution may not match Onana’s, but his shot-stopping and presence arguably make him a more reliable No.1.
Fans may also feel reassured that the club are thinking long-term. Onana’s injury might have prompted this latest wave of interest, but the fact that United made an enquiry earlier in the summer suggests this isn’t just a temporary fix. If PSG are open to selling, and United can negotiate a reasonable fee, Donnarumma could be a major upgrade—both immediately and for the next five to six years.
Of course, questions remain about how he’d adapt to the Premier League, but his pedigree suggests he wouldn’t take long to settle. With Martinez unavailable and Onana uncertain, most United supporters would welcome Donnarumma with open arms.
