Ireland kicked off their World Cup push in dramatic style, clawing back from two goals down to earn a draw against 10-man Hungary in Dublin.
The visitors wasted no time in showing their intent. Barely two minutes had passed when Barnabás Varga latched onto a ball from Callum Styles and fired Hungary into the lead.
Ireland were still trying to settle when the Aviva Stadium crowd was stunned again. Roland Sallai, played through by Dominik Szoboszlai, doubled the advantage to leave the hosts with a mountain to climb.
After the break, Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side came out with far more purpose and quickly pulled one back. Just four minutes into the second half, Evan Ferguson struck to give Ireland hope. The momentum briefly swung their way and Hungary’s night got even trickier when Sallai, the scorer of their second, was shown a straight red.
With the man advantage, the hosts pressed hard and, deep into stoppage time, they got their reward. Ryan Manning delivered the cross and Adam Idah was there to finish, snatching a dramatic equaliser in the 93rd minute and rescuing a point for the hosts.
