Eagles boss left fans reeling with simultaneous bombshell revelations

Oliver Glasner and Crystal Palace chose to go public about his summer departure and the sale of Marc Guehi to Manchester City in the same press conference so the Austrian could not be accused of quitting in protest.

In a Friday afternoon press conference that featured two pieces of bombshell news, Glasner confirmed club captain Marc Guehi’s move to City is in the “final stages” and also revealed he himself would leave Palace in the summer when his contract ends.

Standard Sport understands a consensus was reached between Glasner and Palace chairman Steve Parish that this was the best time to reveal his summer departure.

It was feared it would look as though Glasner was annoyed by the club sanctioning Guehi’s exit if the news of the head coach’s exit came later.

It was always planned that Glasner would go public about his summer exit over the next few weeks.

Glasner first told Parish in October of his intention to leave when his contract was up.

It was viewed internally that there was a small window between the club’s humiliating FA Cup exit to sixth-tier Macclesfield and the resumption of their Conference League campaign when Glasner’s summer exit would have to be revealed so questioning about his future and rumour of any disgruntlement could not be allowed to build.

Glasner is widely regarded as the greatest head coach in Palace’s history, having won the club their very first piece of silverware by winning last year’s FA Cup. He then followed that up by winning the Community Shield.

This season has been the Eagles’ very first in a major European competition.

But they are set to lose Glasner in the summer and their captain even sooner. Guehi is set to join City for around £20million plus bonuses. His contract was also due to expire in the summer and, like Glasner, he did not intend to sign a new one.

Glasner said on Friday: “I told the team today because I think now it’s important to have clarity. I don’t want this question of the players and what’s going on.

“We had a very busy schedule, which is why we didn’t want to tell it. Steve and I want the same: the best for Crystal Palace. Steve [Parish] has no ego and Oliver Glasner has no ego. Now we think it’s important to have clarity on both sides.”
