The RFEF’s Technical Committee of Referees has reprimanded the assistant involved in Atlético Madrid’s second goal at Valencia, while maintaining the goal was correctly awarded.
The match delivered one of the weekend’s flashpoints, with Valencia players and supporters protesting after the assistant raised his flag before the move ended. In its 'Tiempo de Revisión' programme, the committee said the flag was lifted prematurely, failing to apply the required delay near goal.
In tight offside situations that could end in a goal, assistants must delay their signal so a potentially valid attack is not stopped and VAR can intervene if the initial call is wrong.
Play remains active until the referee halts it, irrespective of any indication from an assistant.
The assistant should have kept the flag down, while the referee showed good judgement in allowing the action to conclude.
