Ricardo Carvalho was part of the crucial generation that turned Chelsea into a big club, and he’s spoken a little about what it was like to join.

Incredibly it’s now 22 years since Ricardo Carvalho came to Chelsea, that same summer as Jose Mourinho arrived to change everything at the club.

In an interview with the club website, the defender had some really nice detail on what it was like to come to Stamford Bridge back then.

Carvalho on staying friends with Drogba

The fact that Mourinho and other Portuguese players joined at the same time made things easier for the likes of Carvalho, but he reveals he bonded with players from all over:

“You are there to play. Of course, it’s good to see people that speak Portuguese and you have a good relationship with, but I still have a good relationship with the other guys I met there, like Didier Drogba,” Carvalho explained.

“We don’t speak often but when we do it’s about remembering those times and how we miss each other. It was a very good team spirit.”

We could do with some of that team spirit back now.
