Liverpool, Richard Hughes and Al-Hilal Links Stir Debate Over Sporting Director Future

Liverpool’s hierarchy has been built on long term planning, measured decision making and a collaborative approach behind the scenes. Yet in modern football, stability rarely stays quiet for long. Reports connecting Richard Hughes with a potential move to Al-Hilal have injected fresh intrigue into Liverpool’s off pitch structure.

Hughes only formally began his role as Liverpool sporting director on June 1, 2024, although his influence started months earlier. Arriving alongside head coach Arne Slot, who famously delivered the Premier League title in his first season in 2024-25, Hughes stepped into one of the most scrutinised recruitment jobs in European football.

Al-Hilal move rumours involving Hughes

While Liverpool continue their campaign under Arne Slot, speculation surrounding Richard Hughes has emerged from Saudi Arabia. Reports suggest Al-Hilal are keen to appoint the Liverpool sporting director as part of their long term football structure.

Saudi Arabia based journalist Ahmed Alajlan claims that an agreement between Hughes and Al-Hilal has already been reached, with only the final signing of a contract remaining.

Alajlan wrote on X: “#Alhilal reaches an agreement with the Scottish “Richard Hughes” to take on the role of sporting director for Al-Hilal Club, and the terms have been agreed upon between both parties, with only the contract signing remaining.

“In the event of signing, Richard Hughes’ assistant team will begin working immediately, with him starting his duties next summer.”

If accurate, the development would represent a significant shift for Liverpool. Hughes has been central to shaping the club’s recruitment structure since arriving from Bournemouth, helping guide the transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure in 2024.

What Al-Hilal interest could mean for Liverpool

For Liverpool supporters, the key question centres on continuity. Stability behind the scenes has been a defining strength during the club’s modern era, particularly in recruitment and squad building.

Al-Hilal have already demonstrated their ambition in the transfer market and in executive recruitment. Adding a Premier League sporting director with Hughes’ profile would fit their wider strategy of attracting experienced football operators.

Whether the move materialises remains to be seen. For now, Liverpool continue to focus on improving results on the pitch, while Hughes maintains confidence in the long term plan that brought him to Anfield.

In football’s executive world, speculation travels quickly. Decisions, however, tend to take longer.
