Liverpool's midfield have not been up to scratch this season.
Even though Ryan Gravenberch may have been given a bumper new contract this term, at the moment, it doesn't feel like he's deserved it.
The Dutchman has been half the player he was last season and Alexis Mac Allister has seemingly forgotten how to run.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones are the two exceptions to this statement but, even they could use with a bit of extra help next term.
Several midfielders have already been linked with an Anfield switch and now, Liverpool have been given a golden opportunity to sign one of their main summer targets.
Adam Wharton is going to be one of the most sought-after midfielders in the world this summer.
The Englishman has been in fine form with many people left rather confused by his absence from Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad.
And, although his omission is sad for the player himself, for the clubs interested in signing him, such as Liverpool, it could be exactly what they needed.
If Wharton ended up going to the World Cup and had an amazing tournament, his value would've almost certainly increased which could've made a deal unobtainable for Liverpool.
However, now that his summer isn't going to be taken up by the tournament, his value will be based on this season's performances alone.
The Englishman's absence from the squad also means that the Reds could get in contact with him instantly and get a deal done early.
This could massively help their chances of signing him and perhaps allow them to get a decent deal for him, especially if Crystal Palace haven't moved any of their players on.
Thanks to his performances over the last couple of years, Wharton has already been described as an "outstanding" midfielder.
This sort of praise, coupled with the amount of Premier League experience he has under his bely prove how good he actually is.
Wharton's favoured position is as a number six but there have been times when Palace have used him a bit further up which means that he'd be a fairly versatile midfielder for Liverpool.
However, since Gravenberch has been miles off the pace, Wharton would probably be used as a competitor for the Dutchman.
And, if their performances from the 2025-26 season are anything to go by, Wharton would almost certainly come out on top in that battle.
first team to make their move.
