Liverpool have made some questionable decisions over the last few years with their 2025-26 summer transfer window giving fans a new sense of hope.

When Jurgen Klopp was in charge of the Anfield outfit very little money was spent for most of his tenure.

Indeed, things were done this way so that the Reds would abide by the Premier League's PSR rules and allow them to conduct a massive summer of spending when their team needed the most changed.

Of course, the fact that over £200 million was raised from moving players on helped in this regard and, on paper, Liverpool's squad may have improved, but, it's taken until the halfway point of the 2025-26 season for things to finally fall in place for some of their new arrivals.

And, even though fans knew that Liverpool needed to make a couple of signings during the winter window to boost their chances of winning some silverware, Richard Hughes chose against making any additions.

Although this may not seem like the end of the world, their next game against Manchester City could prove how silly Hughes was.

Liverpool could end up facing Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo on Sunday

The duo would've been perfect targets for Arne Slot's team, especially since they're have both homegrown.

However, despite how perfect a move for the duo would've been, nothing ever came to fruition even though they were only inches away from securing Guehi's services in the summer.

Semenyo would've also been a massive help due to the lack of form that some of Liverpool's attacker's have shown this season.

However, a move for both players clearly wasn't meant to be with Slot and Hughes choosing to stick with what they've got.

Even though Liverpool didn't make a move for either player, Manchester City chose to swoop in and prise both players away from their clubs.

And, since the Reds are set to face the Cityzens on Sunday, Hughes' choice not to sign either player could come back to bite him.

Liverpool must figure out how to break down Marc Guehi and stop Antoine Semenyo from scoring

Neither Manchester City or Liverpool have been in the best run of form this season.

Indeed, Pep Guardiola's men may only be six points behind first-placed Arsenal but, with the amount of quality they have among their ranks, they should've done a lot better.

But, now that they have Semenyo and have managed to solve their defensive issues with the addition of Guehi, they could be a force to be reckoned with.

A lot of City's problems this term have occurred due to the number of injuries they've suffered, much like Liverpool.

However, the fact that they've acted upon their issues could be the thing that separates them from their rivals in the second half of the campaign.

If Liverpool want any chance of beating City, one of the main problems they'll face is shutting down and getting past their new signings.

Of course, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz could end up producing a couple of world-class moments but, with Guehi now settled into his new surroundings, it's hard to tell whether or not they'll be able to do that.

Sunday's clash against Guardiola's men could end up being a crucial point in the season for both teams, so, even if it may feel like there's nothing riding on this game, there's plenty for both teams to go at and earn from the clash.
