Rob Edwards has praised Wolves midfielder Jerome Abbey after the teenager made club history, and says recent breakthroughs could motivate the next wave from the academy. ExpressAndStar.com reports that the head coach wants academy success to inspire others.
At 16 years, eight months and eight days, Abbey became Wolves’ youngest Premier League player and the second youngest in the club’s history when he came off the bench at Burnley.
Edwards felt the youngster seized his chance, saying Abbey impressed off the bench and took the opportunity well, adding that circumstances in midfield created the opening.
He also highlighted the work of staff across a strong academy and said opportunities will come if coaches feel youngsters are ready, while stressing they must be good enough and that Abbey still has plenty of work ahead.
Mateus Mane has become a first-team regular under Edwards, with Tom Edozie also featuring this season. After Abbey’s debut, senior striker Adam Armstrong said he was delighted for both prospects and felt they can keep getting better.
