Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has paid a warm tribute to Sunderland ahead of a pre-season meeting on the Black Cats’ US tour later this year.

The club said in a statement that the squad will spend a week in Nashville, finishing with Liverpool at Geodis Park on Saturday 25 July. They then face Leeds United in Harrison, New Jersey, on Thursday 30 July, before concluding against Wrexham at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, in early August.

McElhenney made the comments while joining Ryan Reynolds on the gantry for Wrexham’s 2-0 Championship win over fellow Welsh side Swansea City on Friday. During the broadcast he expressed admiration for Sunderland and their long-awaited Premier League return last year.

He said he had watched Sunderland Til’ I Die and found it a beautiful documentary. He added that playing them in Philadelphia would be an honour, and that he had backed them in the play-offs and was delighted when they went up, saying they deserved it.

At the time of writing, Wrexham could yet join Sunderland in the Premier League next season. The Championship club have won four of their last five league matches, sit sixth, and after three successive promotions under former Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson are tracking for a play-off place.
