Legends Depart: Andy Robertson
The end of this season marks the end of two journeys of players who have been essential to the success of the last 10 years of this football club, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson.
When they both signed in July 2017, there weren’t huge transfer fees and expectations surrounding them like today’s Liverpool signings have. They created the opportunity to have those luxury signings. Salah’s £36.9 million transfer fee and Andrew Robertson’s £8 million fee, they both are two of the biggest value-for-money signings in the club’s history.
In return, Mohamed Salah provided 191 goals in his 315 appearances in red as the third all-time goal scorer at the club, and Robertson played 274 games and broke the record for most assists as a defender with 60 assists. Record breakers.
In their nine-year tenures, the pair have won nine trophies, including an FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, a Club World Cup, a Super Cup, the Community Shield, a Champions League and two Premier League titles. Historic.
To see two players who went from relatively unknown talents to becoming club legends who have been the best in the world in their position reflects on them as top professionals in their talent and work ethic.
We were all disappointed to hear the news of their departures, but as we have had time to reflect on their time at the club, it is obvious why they are leaving the club as legends.
Danny Ings On Andy Robertson: Relationship With Liverpool Fans & Dressing Room Leadership
Speaking to many of their former teammates and coaches, this is a tribute reflecting on the people leaving this club and how they’ve been the pillars of creating what we knew as the Liverpool we have all loved over the last nine years.
Andrew Robertson…
The Premier League’s all-time top assister as a defender sometimes gets overlooked for just how good he was. He never once stopped running, which reflected what former Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips said reflected “his dedication, his commitment and his intensity on the pitch”.
Always smiling, always giving 100%; as former Liverpool legend Steve McMahon said, “There aren’t many like him now,” showing just how hard it is to maintain that level of intensity and dedication in today’s professional game.
Seen as a role model to the team, McMahon knows what makes a Liverpool player, and he believes Robertson fulfils those qualities. “A professional through and through. He hasn’t come out moaning or whining when he’s left out, and when he’s called up, he gives his best. His commitment, his effort, his drive – all the things that you need in a Liverpool player. He’s an example of how things should be done.” Fellow ex-Liverpool fullback Jose Enrique also admires the Scotsman’s consistency, as he’s his first choice in his team always: “You ask me to pick one player for my team, and I’ll always pick Robertson. Every game, he delivered an 8 or 9 out of 10. Attacking and defending, he gave his all.”
It’s that role model impression that both Salah and Robertson have, which is the lasting impression on the people who are in the building with them every day. It is what makes the departures so hard for fans, with how they embody the club and, undoubtedly, for the players as well. It’s not just former players who give Robertson such high praise; it’s his own former teammates who are still playing, too. His leadership in the dressing room, even before he was made vice-captain last season, was evident. Former teammates Jordan Henderson, with whom he won a Premier League and a Champions League, and Nat Phillips, with whom he played alongside in the COVID year when the club had an injury crisis in defence, both gave him such deserving accolades about what he adds to the team.
The defender, now at West Brom, said, “He never drops his head, and he always sets the standard that everyone has to match. If Robbo is doing it, everyone can do it.”
“His route to where he is now wasn’t straightforward. That reflects on the pitch. He wasn’t willing to give it up. In that time, he’s improved so much, but the numbers he put up with assists – if wingers put those numbers up, everyone would be talking about it, and he was doing that at left back for Liverpool.”
The record-breaking numbers aren’t ever spoken about enough, and it would be a shame for him to be so overlooked when he added so much to the team.
Jordan Henderson On Andy Robertson: Initial Struggles & Becoming One Of Europe’s Best Full-Backs
His on-the-pitch efforts had so many noticeable moments, which also cannot be forgotten, such as Manchester City, which is mentioned by Nat Phillips, and Aston Villa away, which Jordan Henderson mentioned when recalling his best moments at the club.
“When you think of him, that’s what comes to mind [the relentless City press]. On the pitch, he’s the person you can turn to. He never drops his head, and he always sets the standard that everyone has to match. If Robbo is doing it, everyone can do it.”
“Villa away, the goal. When we’re going for the title, it’s a big moment. He comes up with an equaliser quite late on, and Sadio gets the winner. It was a big moment for me, and I think it was a nice moment for Robbo as well.”
Henderson also highlighted his importance within the leadership, adding, “He was such a great character to have in the dressing room. He could relax people by having a laugh with everyone and having a joke, but Robbo had a serious side as well and also that leadership role as time went on. When you’re travelling and playing games, he’s a really good guy to have around. Everyone loves Robbo, the players and the staff. He’s a very warm person; I’m sure they’ll feel his loss next year.” The importance of a player’s ability always emphasises who they are as people, and Robertson’s legacy for what he did on and off the pitch will always be remembered. It was that infectious off-the-pitch humour which made fans fall in love with the Scotsman; it made him a highly valued teammate, and he put smiles on everyone’s faces as a fan, with his performances rarely ever dropping below a 7 or 8 out of 10. His best off-the-pitch moment for me was when he said, “Why am I always at the front!” during the team photos.
A fitting tribute by Henderson, who is one of Robertson’s good friends, shows just how much he is valued at the club.
“Robbo helped me a lot; he was a great player to rely on and is a person I can go to with everything I still can now. A top professional, a top human being. Our families are quite close; we see each other on holidays. Together we had a lot of good times. I miss seeing Robbo. I miss seeing him every day; he’s such a positive person and makes you feel good.”
It was also felt by those who weren’t teammates with Robertson for as long, with Nat Phillips also having high praise for how Robbo took him under his wing.
“I had to lean on my teammates and experienced ones, and Robbo took that; he took that responsibility to help me through at the time. I was grateful for that.”
“That’s why the fans take to him so much. That’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Robbo. What you see online is him; what you see is what you get. He’s such a down-to-earth guy and an exceptional footballer. Who he is plays into him on the pitch. His dedication, his commitment levels and his intensity on the pitch as well.”
To see both of these legendary players leave at the same time is a sign of a new era at the club officially coming in, and the end of the Klopp dynasty feels like it has arrived. It is sad to know that I have gone from a child to a man in the time they’ve been at the club, and growing up watching them every week is something we all took for granted until we realised what they meant to our team and us.
590 combined appearances. Goals and assist records smashed across Europe as well as domestically.
Nine trophies have been won since the pair joined nine years ago. Historic and legendary players.
We at the Redmen TV wish the very best to both Mohammed Salah and Andrew Robertson in the future and thank them for being part of one of the club’s best teams in their nine years at the club. You’ll Never Walk Alone.
