Earlier in the summer, Robert Lewandowski left Barcelona upon the expiry of his contract to join MLS side Chicago Fire. The 37-year-old decided against signing a renewal at the Spotify Camp Nou, and despite having offers to stay in Europe, he opted to continue his career in the United States.
Lewandowski attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, such as Inter Milan, Juventus and Manchester United. However, he was clear that he did not want to come up against Barcelona in any competition, which is why he chose Chicago Fire and the MLS as his next destination (via Sport).
“I’m very happy to be here, I see potential to win more titles. It’s a new step in my life and I hope I can enjoy it. Together, with the staff and the players, we will be in a good position to achieve great things in the season. My time in Barcelona is over and, after that, I didn’t want to continue in Europe. I couldn’t imagine myself at any other European club than Barça. It’s not easy to move here, but we’re very excited. It’s a new experience.”
Lewandowski also explained that he consulted several former teammates before opting for the MLS, as he also played down fears from within his family about living in Chicago.
“In recent months I spoke with former teammates who knew the club and the league, Müller, Schweinsteiger… We wanted to be ready for this move, know more about the league, the level, and everyone I consulted told me that it was a magnificent place to live, for the family as well.”
Lewandowski is not the first footballer to move away from Europe in order to avoid facing Barcelona as an opposition player, and he surely will not be the last either. However, he will surely have the club’s supporters keeping an eye on his progress in the United States over the coming months.
