Robert Lewandowski’s Barcelona contract has now officially expired, meaning that he has left the club for MLS side Chicago Fire. The 37-year-old opted against staying at the Spotify Camp Nou for another season, knowing that he would have to take a significant pay cut and accept a reduced squad role if he were to have continued.
Nevertheless, there was a lot of emotional for Lewandowski upon leaving Barcelona, whom he represented with pride over the last four seasons. His wife Anna Lewandowska was equally tearful as he penned a heartfelt open letter on Instagram (via Sport) now that her husband’s stint in Catalonia is officially over.
“I thought a lot about what to write about here. You could post a photo smiling, write that ‘let’s go for new things’ and pretend everything is perfect. But it is not. And I want to be completely honest with you. We are facing a big change: moving to Chicago. And although I should be writing about emotion, today I want to tell you one thing: I’m scared to death.
“The last few weeks have been a roller coaster of extreme emotions for me. Barcelona has become my home. My refuge, which I fell in love with with all my heart. The thought of having to pack again, leave what I’ve built, and start pretty much from scratch terrifies me. As a mother, I feel enormous stress. I worry about the girls and their emotions, the new school, how they will adapt to a whole new world. Anyone who has gone through such a big move with children knows this.”
Lewandowska expressed a lot of fear and concern during her statement, as she concluded by opening up on the harsh reality of being married to a global sports star in Lewandowski.
“Life with an athlete is not only glamour, it also involves difficult family concessions. Robert’s professional career presents us with a new challenge. I support him unconditionally and with all my strength because we are a team. But as a woman, I have the right to be afraid. I have a right to feel overwhelmed, and today I’m not going to pretend otherwise. I write this because I know that many of you are also facing life changes that generate fear. I want them to know that it’s normal.”
