Big-spending Spurs’ ambitious summer recruitment drive is far from over

Roberto De Zerbi has revealed that he wants Tottenham to make “two or three” more signings before the end of the transfer window.

The Spurs boss raised eyebrows on Thursday when he admitted the club were close to sealing the surprise seventh signing of a busy summer as they look to add attacking reinforcements.

Speculation over who the mystery “bomba” signing could be gathered pace over the last 24 hours, and head coach De Zerbi has now sought to clarify his comments.

“Bomba in Italian is different from bomba in English,” he told reporters in Sydney, where Tottenham face London rivals Chelsea in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

“You can write what you want, no problem, no pressure. But I said we have to complete the transfer market.

“I think we have some other players to complete the squad, and the players (who) will be here in the next days are for me, top players.

“I don't know if the expectations are bigger than two days ago, but we have to go forward and to think to the good of the team, of the club, of the squad. But in Italian, it's a different word.”

Asked to clarify what he meant by the word ‘bomba ’, De Zerbi said: “[Sandro] Tonali, [Mateus] Fernandes, [Marcos] Senesi, [Andy] Robertson are bomba. Top players for us.”

Spurs are in the market for a new winger and potentially also a striker before the end of the transfer window.

They have been heavily linked with a move for Manchester City winger Savinho and the Brazilian is believed to have this week expressed his desire to move in search of regular minutes.

Spurs have also been tentatively linked with City forward Omar Marmoush, and De Zerbi admits the club are still actively looking for new players despite spending a club-record £237million already this summer.

“I think two, maybe three (new signings). We have to see,” De Zerbi continued, before adding there would be no pressure on Spurs’ new recruits to perform despite successive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League.

“(There is) zero pressure. You know why? Because one day the taxi man in London stopped me to congratulate me on the transfer market.

“He said, ‘Eh, you are spending a lot of money’. I said, ‘But who are you a fan of?’ Arsenal. You have spent the money for a long time in the last three or four years.

“I think Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, to stay at the top of the table, they have spent money.

“If you want to compete now, for the top of the Premier League, and to put Tottenham in the highest level, I think we need to bring top players, like we are doing.”
