Manchester United return to Premier League action with a mouthwatering tie against fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Three points will go a long way in cementing Ruben Amorim’s position after a tough start to the new season.

But a heavy defeat could throw things into disarray, and despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s comments backing the head coach, Amorim will know the risks of what a defeat could bring.

And now, The Sun have claimed former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is confident of stepping into the Old Trafford hot seat should INEOS change their minds.

Mancini to replace Amorim?

In fact, the Italian has told his close friends that he could become a prime contender to replace the Portuguese tactician and has met with INEOS supremo at various gatherings.

He has quite the CV, including a Premier League title as well as the European Championships he won with Italy at the expense of England.

“He has a Premier League title under his belt and certainly knows the Manchester football scene after spending three and a half years over here.

“But could Roberto Mancini really be in the frame if United decide to give Ruben Amorim the push?

“The 60-year-old Italian – out of work since leaving his role with Saudi Arabia a year ago – has told friends he believes he could be in with a shout if the Red Devils do make a change.

Told his friends already

“Like Sir Jim Ratcliffe, he has a base in the South of France and is believed to have met the Ineos magnate at various social functions.”

He has been without a job since October of last year, after being relieved of his duties by the Saudi Arabian FA.

Apart from the dramatic Premier League title, Roberto Mancini also clinched the FA Cup while he is also a three-time Serie A winner with Inter Milan.

It seems unlikely that United will plump for the former City boss even if Amorim gets the sack, Hopefully, such a scenario can be avoided and Amorim can inspire the Red Devils to a win on Sunday.
