Roberto Martínez has left Bernardo Silva out of Portugal’s squad as a technical decision, with Manchester City’s medical advice also a factor. He said this international window will be used to look at new options.
According to Glorioso 1904, the head coach spoke at Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras, stressing the need to create space to call deserving newcomers.
He offered reassurance that World Cup participation is not in danger and said the muscle issue in question is minor. He added that a return could come within one or two weeks. He praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s physical work this season and said the forward is in a very good moment.
Benfica pair António Silva and Tomás Araújo were called for the latest squad. Others with links to the Lisbon club selected are João Cancelo, João Neves, João Félix, Gonçalo Ramos and Gonçalo Guedes.
Portugal face Mexico on Sunday 29 March at 02:00 at Estadio Azteca. They then meet the USA on Wednesday 1 April at 00:00 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
