Rodrigo De Paul, the Inter Miami and Argentina midfielder, moved to distance the national team from the row around AFA leadership, stressing the squad do not engage in politics, voicing concern over the social climate and calling for greater unity.
Argentina’s camp has featured wins over Mauritania 2-1 and Zambia 5-0, with De Paul a senior figure in the world champion squad. According to SuperDepor.com, his remarks came amid public backlash against AFA leaders, with president Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia embroiled in controversies and a fraud case.
De Paul underlined that the players are footballers, not politicians, and want to be judged for what they do on the pitch. He said they will always try to defend the Argentina shirt in the role they fought hard to earn.
He broadened his message beyond football, expressing anger at seeing a country that, instead of uniting, tears itself down.
Sections of the public have linked the squad to the dispute around the federation chief, a characterisation De Paul sought to dismiss.
