Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford by West Ham United on Thursday, 4 November, in the Premier League. Diogo Dalot gave his team the lead in the 58th minute, but it was cancelled out by Soungoutou Magassa’s 83rd-minute strike.

The Red Devils had multiple chances to put the game to bed, but were punished for not making them count. The draw cut into the optimism from the hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, as was evident from the boos ringing around the Theatre of Dreams at full-time.

The game also highlighted the fact that Ruben Amorim’s team still lack a bit of punch in the final third.

The problematic left flank

United were determined to upgrade their attack this summer, and spent over £200 million on Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. Mbeumo has been a hit so far, while Sesko has struggled, which was perhaps expected from a young player arriving in a new league.

However, it is Cunha’s slow start to life at the Theatre of Dreams that has raised a few eyebrows. The Brazilian was outstanding for Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, prompting the Red Devils to secure his signature early this summer.

However, the 26 year old has registered just one goal from 12 games across competitions since his move, 10 of which have been starts.

While Cunha has displayed flashes of brilliance, his struggles have hurt Amorim’s side, who have had to rely on the Amad Diallo-Mbeumo partnership on the right for most of their attack. Mason Mount has provided cover in the left-forward position as well, but it now appears that the Premier League giants have now turned to a Real Madrid star to solve the issue.

United monitoring Rodrygo

According to Fichajes, United are keeping a close eye on Rodrygo Goes’ situation at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Brazilian was once regarded as one of the finest forwards in the world, but his situation has changed since Kylian Mbappe’s arrival.

Rodrygo has been in and out of the first team in recent times, and he has failed to cement a place in Xabi Alonso’s starting XI this season. He is yet to score a goal this season from 16 appearances, only four of which were starts.

With Vinicius Junior and Mbappe already in the team, Rodrygo’s future remains unclear and his suitors are ready to take advantage. Tottenham Hotspur are showing the most interest, while United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are also in the race.

The 24 year old could be an upgrade on Cunha at the Theatre of Dreams, although United have other priorities in 2026, with a new midfielder at the top of their wish list. Real Madrid are reportedly planning to demand at least €80 million to let Rodrygo leave, so the finances involved could be a constraint for INEOS.

Final Thoughts

United have previously been linked with a move for Rodrygo, although the transfer has not materialised. While the player could add a new dimension to Amorim’s attack, reports of a move should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The Red Devils are expected to focus all their attention on the midfield in 2026, so talk of a blockbuster move for Rodrygo appears too good to be true. Meanwhile, the Premier League giants are likely to be patient with Cunha, who has all the attributes to be an Old Trafford great.
