Former Santos forward Rodrygo has suffered a right anterior cruciate ligament injury and will miss the World Cup. The Real Madrid player was hurt during Monday’s La Liga defeat by Getafe at the Bernabeu.
He came on 10 minutes into the second half of the 1-0 loss. Real Madrid said tests confirmed a ruptured ACL and a lateral meniscus tear in his right leg.
Recovery from such injuries typically takes six to nine months. Rodrygo had been a certainty for Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad, so his absence opens a place.
Santos attacking midfielder Neymar Jr is pushing to stake his claim for that spot and wants to be in Brazil’s next call-up on Monday 16 March.
It will be Brazil’s final list before the official squad. Friendlies in the United States are scheduled against France on 26 March in Foxborough and Croatia on 31 March in Orlando.
After those games, the definitive squad will face Egypt in Cleveland on 16 June.
Neymar returned after December arthroscopy, came on at half-time in a Paulistão win over Velo Clube, then started in the loss to Novorizontino that ended Santos’ state campaign. He later started and scored twice in a Brasileirão win over Vasco.
Before the next list, he could feature against Mirassol on 10 March and Corinthians on 15 March. The staff have managed his minutes cautiously to maximise his chances of a call-up.
