The ‘three-horse’ Premiership title race is heading towards a photo finish, with Rangers now ahead of Celtic following the latter’s shocking defeat against Dundee United before the international break. However, the Light Blues remain three points behind league leaders Hearts, and they must avoid a similar setback against the Tangerines, who will visit Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, a win would temporarily see Rangers clinch the top-of-the-table spot, given the Jamtarts’ clash with Livingston on Sunday. Danny Rohl has an impressive home record since succeeding Russell Martin as the Gers’ chief, but it won’t be a stroll in the park for the German, as both their meetings have finished all square so far this season.
Rangers have improved their defensive record under Rohl’s tutelage. Jack Butland, too, deserves appreciation, as he has shown composure and stability between the sticks.
Rohl would be boosted by Derek Cornelius’ return following a long injury absence. But he has ample options in deep defence, with Nasser Djiga being the preferred option of late over John Souttar to partner with Manny Fernandez. Skipper James Tavernier should keep his place on the right ahead of Dujon Sterling after finding the net against Aberdeen. Tuur Rommens has been a revelation down the left, as the Belgian has cemented a starting status over Jayden Meghoma upon his winter arrival from Westerlo.
Mohamed Diomande might have to wait for his opportunities deep down the midfield, as the likes of Nicolas Raskin, Tochi Chukwuani and Connor Barron are now ahead of the Ivorian in the pecking order. Raskin and Chukwuani should be the preferred pair for their ability to marshal the backline and script attacking transitions as deep-lying playmakers.
Although Andreas Skov Olsen is available again after missing the Dons’ tie due to illness, the Danish winger has yet to live up to the expectations despite completing a high-profile loan move from Wolfsburg. It remains to be seen whether Rangers make the move permanent, but the gaffer should once again opt for Thelo Aasgaard on the right after his encouraging display against Aberdeen. Mikey Moore has been exquisite from the left-hand flank, and the on-loan Tottenham Hotspur teenager must showcase his flair and finesse with swift footwork and dribbling.
Ryan Naderi needs to work harder to attune to the aggression and physicality of Scottish football. But Rohl has trusted him for his high work ethic and flexibility in and around the attacking third. He is expected to retain his place alongside Youssef Chermiti as the striking duo, with Bojan Miovski finding it difficult to fit into the manager’s style of play.
