As expected, the biggest football celebration on the planet kicked off this afternoon at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Mexico earning a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa at Estadio Ciudad de México, with a strong Chivas presence on display.

It was evident from the start, as Javier Aguirre included three Guadalajara players in his starting lineup: Raúl Rangel, Brian Gutiérrez and Roberto Alvarado, all of whom played key roles in shaping El Tri’s performance and victory.

Brian was instrumental in midfield. Not only did he touch the first ball of the tournament, but he was also highly active all over the pitch and drew South Africa’s red card with an excellent run behind the defense, forcing a foul near the edge of the box thanks to his intelligent movement.

“Piojo” pulled the strings in Mexico’s attack, constantly serving as the team’s creative outlet. He was heavily involved in the offensive buildup and eventually recorded an assist on Mexico’s second goal, delivering a precise cross that Raúl Jiménez headed home. He also drew another red card for the opposition late in the match.

“Tala” once again showed why he is considered one of Mexico’s top goalkeepers. Although he was rarely tested due to the flow of the match, he displayed the composure and reliability that have become his trademark whenever called upon.

The Chivas representation did not end there, as Armando González came on in the 75th minute and added fresh energy to Mexico’s frontline.

After a standout opening performance from Guadalajara’s players, they will look to continue their strong World Cup campaign on June 18, when Mexico faces South Korea at Estadio Guadalajara in its second group-stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
