Roma have identified Atletico Madrid’s Matteo Ruggeri as a key target to bolster their defensive options, though any potential deal remains complicated by the Spanish club’s current stance.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giallorossi are showing strong interest in the 23-year-old, who is reportedly open to the idea of returning to Italy. However, Atletico Madrid are not keen on sanctioning a sale at this stage. Diego Simeone’s side has already authorized several high-profile departures this month and is reluctant to lose another squad member without a guaranteed replacement in place.

Having already generated significant revenue from sales, the Colchoneros are under no financial pressure to sell. Consequently, they have informed Roma that they will not entertain an exit for Ruggeri unless they can first secure a suitable alternative to fill the void in their defense.

While the player’s desire for more consistent playing time in Serie A could play a role, the operation is currently at a standstill as Atletico prioritizes squad depth following their recent market activity.
