Roma have reportedly made initial contact with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a potential summer transfer for midfielder Matt O’Riley, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Seagulls are believed to be demanding a fee of around €25 million to part ways with O’Riley just 12 months after his arrival.
Brighton paid €31m for O’Riley after a stellar season with Celtic, where he racked up 19 goals and 18 assists across all competitions.
The Denmark international had a rough start to life at the Amex Stadium after picking up an ankle injury on his debut.
Although he made a memorable return to action, scoring a late winner against Manchester City, consistent game time has eluded him under manager Fabian Hurzeler.
New Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini wants to sign O’Riley. Gasperini has liked O’Riley since his time at Celtic and was keen to sign him when he was still Atalanta manager last year.
O’Riley has reportedly given his green light for a move to Roma, who are now in contact with Brighton to strike a deal.
A switch to Roma could reignite his promising career following an injury-stalled season in England, and Brighton will get the opportunity to recoup some of the money they paid for him.
The Premier League club recently signed Greek teenager Charalampos Kostoulas, which has raised doubts over Joao Pedro’s future.
Newcastle United want Pedro, and a deal could materialise in the coming weeks.
