Sunderland could face competition from Roma if they revive interest in Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi in the summer window.
"Jhon has already spent three years with us, which is a long time in today's football. He had the ambition to leave, but unfortunately, the timeframe for the offer didn't materialise," Bologna chairman Claudio Fenucci said, speaking to Il Resto del Carlino earlier this year.
The Black Cats were strongly linked with the Colombia international last summer. An offer was reported and then rejected as Bologna failed to source a replacement, after which Sunderland moved for Omar Alderete.
Bologna are now thought to be seeking a replacement for Lucumi, increasing the chance of a summer move. Sunderland are believed to be keen to strengthen in defence, although it is unclear whether Lucumi will return to their shortlist.
Roma could step up if uncertainty around Evan Ndicka persists. The Ivory Coast defender is said to be attracting Premier League interest, with Roma thought to value him at around £35m, and any exit could trigger a move for Lucumi. Sunderland have been described as 'the only obstacle' to Roma's pursuit.
