Sunderland could face Roma competition if they choose to revisit a move for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí this summer.

The Black Cats were heavily linked last year, with an official offer reported to have been lodged before Bologna rejected it due to a lack of replacement. Sunderland then pivoted to what proved a successful deal for Omar Alderete.

Bologna chairman Claudio Fenucci said earlier this year: "I've always said we'd prefer to keep everyone, even though we know that in reality, certain offers can be tough, especially if the Premier League comes knocking," speaking to Il Resto del Carlino. "He had the ambition to leave, but unfortunately, the timeframe for the offer didn't materialise."

Bologna are now understood to be seeking a replacement for Lucumí, increasing the chance of a summer departure. Sunderland are believed to want to bolster their defence, although it is unclear whether Lucumí will return to their shortlist.

Roma could re-enter the frame, having tracked Lucumí last summer and revisiting the idea amid uncertainty over Evan Ndicka. Premier League clubs are linked with the Ivory Coast defender and Roma are said to want around £35m, with any exit potentially triggering a move for Lucumí. In some reports, Sunderland are described as the only obstacle to Roma landing the Bologna centre-back.
