Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is reportedly edging ever closer towards earning the permanent role.

The 44-year-old took over as interim coach in mid-January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, who delivered a shocking press conference on his final day at the club.

Unlike the Portuguese’s mostly turbulent reign, Man Utd have found internal peace under Carrick, who has won over the support and appreciation of everyone at the club.

Man Utd delighted with Michael Carrick’s work

When Carrick first took over the job, Man Utd were lying 7th in the table. 12 matches into his reign, the team sits third, with their chances of securing Champions League football growing by the day, especially following last weekend’s victory at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the Englishman’s exploits, the MUFC officials have been reluctant to make a final decision on their head coach for next season, taking lessons from some of the club’s hasty calls in the past, which returned to haunt them, including the premature confirmation of Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Erik ten Hag’s contract extension in 2024.

And yet, Fabrizio Romano insists that Carrick is the absolute favourite for the role, with the management extremely happy with his work on all levels.

The Italian journalist doesn’t expect an immediate decision to be taken, but believes the former midfielder is in a very good spot heading to the decisive weeks.

“The feeling internally at Manchester United is that they very happy with Michael Carrick recently even more,” said Romano in his Friday morning update on his YouTube channel.

“Michael Carrick is having serious, serious possibilities to take the permanent job at Man United. Very happy with the results, very happy with the tactic approach, very happy with the attitude, very happy with the relationship, and that’s a very important point, relationship manager-players is very good also with the leaders of the dressing room, with the young players as well.

“So Michael Carrick has good chances to continue at Manchester United. Still not something 100% decided. Still not something directly confirmed by Man United to Michael Carrick. So let’s wait a bit. But Michael Carrick has possibilities to continue as Man United head coach.”

Why Michael Carrick is the favourite for permanent Man Utd role

While a few clubs’ legends, including Roy Keane and Gary Neville, have been sceptical, the majority of former Man Utd players have vouched for Carrick, including his former teammates Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Wes Brown and Rio Ferdinand.

In addition to the vastly improved results and performances, Carrick has also brought a sense of serenity to the club.

He has also illustrated the importance of the club’s academy by attending as many youth team matches as he can, something that Amorim never fashioned.

Carrick’s chances have also been boosted by the availability of some of the most prominent managers in the sport, including Carlo Ancelotti, Thomas Tuchel, and Luis Enrique, who appear destined to remain at Brazil, England, and PSG, respectively, while it remains to be seen if Julian Nagelsmann will extend his time with Germany beyond the World Cup.
