Liverpool remain intent on adding defensive reinforcements before the close of the transfer window, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi a leading target. The 23-year-old centre-back is entering the final year of his contract, a factor that could open the door to a reduced fee. Palace chairman Steve Parish has publicly acknowledged the likelihood of a sale, provided an acceptable valuation is met.
Club sources indicate that Liverpool’s hierarchy view Guehi as a long-term solution at the heart of defence. The player’s contractual situation places Palace under pressure to secure a deal now rather than risk losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined Liverpool’s strong position in discussions, explaining that negotiations with Palace remain ongoing. He also suggested that personal terms with the player’s representatives are essentially in place, leaving the final agreement between clubs as the primary obstacle.
“On Liverpool, I insist they are still working for Marc Guehi,” Romano noted in a recent update. “There’s still a conversation ongoing with Crystal Palace, still a conversation ongoing with the player side because the agreement with the player is okay, from what I’m hearing. Still waiting to see what happens club to club. But Marc Guehi wants to go to Liverpool. If it’s not now, it’s going to be in the future.”
His assessment suggests that Liverpool are positioned to secure Guehi’s signature, whether in the current window or by next summer.
While Liverpool press ahead, the market for central defenders is particularly active. Real Madrid are monitoring alternatives ahead of potential squad changes, and Guehi’s profile fits their recruitment model. With contracts of several established defenders across Europe set to expire, timing could prove decisive.
Sources close to the deal suggest that Palace are willing to explore bids in the coming weeks, though much may depend on whether any late interest materialises from abroad. Should Madrid or another major club accelerate their pursuit, it could impact Liverpool’s strategy.
Jürgen Klopp’s side are prioritising defensive stability after a campaign in which injuries and inconsistency disrupted progress. Guehi’s combination of Premier League experience and age profile makes him particularly attractive. Securing his signing now would allow Liverpool to integrate him ahead of next season, avoiding a potential auction for his services once he is available as a free agent.
Liverpool’s track record in identifying and securing key targets late in windows has been mixed, but the expectation around Anfield is that Guehi remains firmly within reach. Whether negotiations accelerate before deadline day or drag into next summer, Romano’s reporting suggests Guehi’s path leads towards Merseyside.
