Federico Chiesa Facing Uncertain Future as Romano Reveals Possible January Exit

Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa could be on the move in January, with reports suggesting growing uncertainty surrounding his future under Arne Slot. According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Italian winger may consider a mid-season departure if his lack of playing time continues, despite earlier indications that both player and club were keen to continue their partnership.

Growing Frustration Over Limited Minutes

Chiesa began the season brightly, providing energy and flair from the bench in several early fixtures. However, his opportunities have dwindled in recent weeks. Arne Slot has largely preferred Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo in Liverpool’s wide attacking roles, leaving Chiesa frustrated by a peripheral role in the squad.

While his professionalism and attitude have reportedly impressed the Dutch coach, the lack of minutes has been difficult for a player who was once among Serie A’s most exciting talents. For a footballer of Chiesa’s calibre—whose game thrives on rhythm and confidence—sporadic cameos offer little chance to rediscover his best form.

Romano Signals Possibility of January Movement

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano outlined how the situation could evolve if Chiesa continues to struggle for opportunities. “It’s been a strange start to the season for Chiesa,” he said, noting that Liverpool’s summer plans had initially involved the winger moving on before a late change of heart.

“The desire of Federico Chiesa is to finish the season at Liverpool and then assess the situation in the summer,” Romano explained. “He wants to stay and fight for his spot, but if that doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t be surprised if Italian clubs return in January to test Liverpool’s resolve.”

Serie A clubs have maintained a long-standing interest in Chiesa, and a return to Italy could become a serious option if his situation at Anfield remains unchanged. However, Romano also hinted that Liverpool’s hierarchy would prefer to keep him until at least the summer window.

Chiesa Balancing Club and Country Ambitions

Chiesa’s ambitions extend beyond club football. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the 27-year-old is determined to secure his place in Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy squad. Regular football is essential for that aim, and the winger knows that staying on the bench at Liverpool could jeopardise his international prospects.

The player’s desire to contribute is undoubted. Supporters have praised his work rate and direct style during limited appearances, but his lack of inclusion in key fixtures has raised eyebrows. For Slot, balancing squad harmony with player satisfaction will be crucial as Liverpool aim to regain consistency in both domestic and European competitions.

Unresolved Chapter in Liverpool’s Evolving Project

Liverpool’s recruitment under Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes has focused on tactical flexibility and squad depth. Yet, Chiesa’s struggle for game time highlights a broader issue: how to integrate creative talents within a system that prizes structure and pressing intensity.

If no resolution is found soon, January could mark a turning point. Chiesa’s technical ability, international pedigree, and ambition make him an attractive target for Serie A sides seeking attacking reinforcements. For now, both Liverpool and the player appear willing to persevere—but as Romano hinted, a potential January exit cannot be ruled out.
