Romelu Lukaku has rejected claims he skipped training with Naples after leaving Belgium's camp and spending time with family, citing a fresh fitness problem.
The player said in a social media post that he would never turn his back on Naples. He added that this season has been difficult, he has dealt with injury and bereavement, and he had not felt right physically in recent weeks.
He also revealed that an examination in Belgium detected inflammation of the hip flexor, close to the scar from the left thigh femoral injury sustained on 14 August. Since it is a second issue after his return in early November, he chose to complete his rehabilitation in Belgium. He wants to play and win with his team but needs to be at 100 per cent, and recent struggles have weighed on him mentally.
He left the Belgium camp early and did not immediately return to Italy, which displeased the club. He spent a few days in Belgium with his relatives.
Lukaku has featured in only seven matches since August, totalling 64 minutes and one goal for Naples. He is said to have been told to report on Tuesday or risk exclusion from the squad.
