Romeu Tuma Júnior defends councillor’s suspension over Corinthians HQ invasion case | OneFootball

Romeu Tuma Júnior has defended the six-month suspension of councillor Mario Mello Junior for his role in the 31 May 2025 attempt to enter Parque São Jorge. The council president said in a statement that there was no alternative penalty and that the presidency does not apply sanctions.

After the Ethics and Discipline Committee recommended Mello Junior’s expulsion, his defence asked to withdraw an acquittal proposal and replace it with a temporary suspension. The plenary rejected nullity preliminaries before judging the merits, then opted for suspension, citing his background and individual conduct.

Members chose between expulsion and a six-month suspension, with the latter passing by 80 votes to 19. He maintained there was no precedent for impunity and no easing of statutory rules.

On 8 June, Maria Angela Ocampos, Paulo Juricic and Ronaldo Fernandez Tomé were expelled for participating in the events, with voting led by Leonardo Pantaleão during Tuma’s leave. The 31 May action aimed to reinstate former president Augusto Melo.

On Monday, councillors Mané da Carne and Marcelo Mariano were removed from the membership, unlike Mello. Mané, a long-time ally of ex-president Andrés Sanchez, was accused of a threat of aggression and a racial insult towards other councillors. Mariano, a former director under Augusto Melo, faces proceedings linked to the VaideBet case, in which he is a defendant in São Paulo.

The Deliberative Council will reconvene on 10 August to hear cases in this order, Claudinei Alves, Valmir Costa and Paulo Cesar de Andrade Prado. Claudinei and Valmir won a suspensive effect in early July and will appeal continued removal. Paulo Cesar could be readmitted following a favourable opinion and a recommendation to return.
