Liam Rosenior says he takes responsibility for the mistakes his Chelsea side made in their 5-2 loss to PSG.
Chelsea conceded three late goals to leave them needing a spectacular turnaround at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
Enzo Fernandez had levelled the score at 2-2 just after the hour mark but goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen’s costly error, which allowed Vitinha to score, sparked a late flurry from PSG as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added two more before full time.
“We made a mistake on the third goal and we didn’t react well to a setback,” Rosenior told TNT Sports after the game. “We didn’t stay calm.
“At that moment, at 3-2, we’re really in the tie, and then Kvaratskhelia scores an unbelievable strike. That happens at this level with the quality of the sides.”
Rosenior says his side did not keep their heads after an incident between Pedro Neto and a PSG ball boy.
“We’re an inch away from 3-3,” he continued. “You never want to lose a game but the fifth goal in that moment after a flashpoint, we don’t keep our heads in that moment, we don’t keep our cool, they break our press and score a fifth goal.
“It makes it very difficult to come back from but it’s not impossible.”
Rosenior also backed Jorgensen, who was handed a start in place of Robert Sanchez in goal, after his costly error.
“You have risks in every way you play,” he said. “If you kick the ball long it can come back to you very quickly, or you can play short and build. That’s the risk that we take.
“I’m accountable for that. I ask the team to play a certain way.
“It’s a shame. Because of those build moments, we had more control in the game than what most teams do here but fundamentally, somehow, talking about xG (expected goals), I think they’ve had 0.8 or something and scored five. That’s something really, really difficult to swallow.”
