Under-fire Flamengo goalkeeper Rossi is enduring one of his toughest spells, yet Leonardo Jardim is keeping faith amid calls to use reserve Andrew. The Argentine has made errors in four of his past five matches, a sequence that included Copa do Brasil elimination and defeat to leaders Palmeiras.
According to Globo.com, Jardim publicly defended him. In the 3-0 loss at Maracanã on Saturday, Carrascal’s red card shaped the game, but it did not mask Rossi’s part in the final two goals. That followed mistakes against Athletico-PR and Palmeiras.
The head coach pointed to last season’s contribution, stressing that confidence remains and the goalkeeping coach is unchanged, calling it a matter of form and hoping for a quick recovery.
Rossi was influential in Flamengo’s 2025 Libertadores and Brasileirão triumphs, earning a pay rise and acclaim from the fans. He was also marked by notable errors, including against Fluminense in the league and PSG in the Copa Intercontinental, the latter eventually ruled out.
This year, beyond those matches, he has slipped up in moments versus Lanús, Grêmio and Vitória. Signed to push Rossi, Andrew has yet to feature under Jardim, even in rotated line-ups.
The club paid almost R$ 10 million to sign the ex-Gil Vicente keeper, who has five appearances this season, all under former coach Filipe Luís. Jardim wants to create an opportunity for Andrew without freezing out Rossi, and still regards Rossi as his first-choice goalkeeper. He has only assessed Andrew from Carioca footage so far.
