Rotherham United need to rebuild following their relegation from League One to League Two.

Rotherham United are in need of a serious rebuild this summer following their relegation from League One to League Two.

The Millers' unwanted return to the fourth tier for the first time since 2013 was confirmed when they were beaten 3-0 by Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.

Gary Caldwell's men were previously in danger of suffering relegation to League Two alongside the South Yorkshire club, but three successive victories mean that the Latics can instead eye a potential top-half finish.

Meanwhile, Rotherham's summer rebuild could see them hire a new manager, as current boss Lee Clark's deal expires at the end of the season - and he's done little to inspire confidence that he's the man to take the club forward next season.

Rotherham United told why they should appoint Darren Ferguson as next manager

The Millers' defeat to Wigan extended their winless run to nine League One games, and they will hope to restore some pride in their four remaining fixtures.

Meanwhile, following the New York Stadium side's relegation, Football League World asked our Rotherham fan pundit, Tom Eyre, who he wants to take charge of his club next term.

Eyre told FLW: "I think that's a really tough question to answer, because I believe that, with the position we are in now, I think Lee Clark is the only person that is realistically going to take the appointment, so we're really struggling with candidates other than that.

"For me, personally, I think I would branch out a bit, and go towards Darren Ferguson.

"I think he's a man who I've respected in the past. I think he's done excellent stuff with Peterborough, although it didn't work out this season due to many reasons, I'm sure.

"He's someone that gets a lot out of young players. He's someone who understands a rebuild. He's someone who understands how to get out of League Two.

"He's a manager who is respected fondly in the EFL at really developing and nurturing talent whilst also getting the best out of senior players, and I think he's the sort of character and the boisterousness, and the demanding figure, authority figure that you need at the club at the minute.

"I can't realistically see that happening, but he's the candidate I'd like to choose."

Darren Ferguson could be exactly what Rotherham United need

One of the saddest stories in the EFL this season has been the downfall of Rotherham, who have been relegated to League Two despite frequently plying their trade in the Championship in recent years.

The Millers' relegation marks their second in just three seasons, and points to the beginning of an unwanted chapter in the South Yorkshire outfit's history.

Rotherham head into League Two as one of the biggest clubs in the fourth tier, in terms of recent history, and need a safe pair of hands to give them a serious opportunity to land an immediate League One return.

The summer transfer window will likely see the Millers lose key assets, such as striker Sam Nombe, who has continued to prove himself as a reliable goalscorer despite his side's struggles.

As summarised by Eyre, Ferguson is a talented manager who served Peterborough well over the years, suggesting that he could also be a great appointment for Rotherham.
