Roy Hodgson set to return to management with Bristol City | OneFootball

Roy Hodgson is set to make a remarkable return to football management at the age of 78 after agreeing to take charge of Bristol City until the end of the season, BBC Sport has reported.

The former England manager replaces Gerhard Struber, who was sacked with the Championship side sitting 16th and facing an anxious run-in. Hodgson will oversee the final seven games of the campaign in what is expected to be a short-term appointment.

It marks a stunning twist in a career that began almost 50 years ago, and one which many believed had ended when he left Crystal Palace in February 2024.

Hodgson is no stranger to Ashton Gate, having briefly managed Bristol City in the early 1980s, though his first spell ended in dismissal. His return, 44 years later, is one of the most eye-catching stories of the season.

Despite difficult spells at Liverpool and with England, Hodgson remains widely respected for steadying clubs in trouble, particularly during his time at Fulham, West Brom and Palace.

Bristol City hope his experience and calm authority can restore stability, while the club continues its search for a long-term head coach and sporting director.
