Roy Keane unsure over Michael Carrick’s Manchester United future, says there are better options | OneFootball

Roy Keane has cast doubt on Michael Carrick as Manchester United’s long-term manager, arguing there are far better options despite an impressive start.

On Sunday Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-1 at home to strengthen third place in the Premier League. It was a seventh win in nine under Carrick since January, with only one defeat.

"He came in at the right time and has done an excellent job. I congratulate him. If he gets the job this summer, I will wish him well, but I think there are far better options for the Manchester United manager’s job," he told Sky Sports.

"If Carrick’s name had been mentioned three months ago for the Manchester United job, everyone would have been sure he had no chance, that he was out of the running. To manage Manchester United, you need someone with trophies and European experience, which he does not have."

"He may have that in a few years, and then he will be in the conversation. Even so, winning games right now obviously gives him an excellent chance. He is doing his job, and I congratulate him for that, but this role involves other responsibilities."

Appointed in January to replace the Portuguese Ruben Amorim, Carrick is contracted until the end of the 2025-2026 season, having played for United for 12 years. The deal could be revisited by June depending on results.

"He should get the job, 100%," Wayne Rooney said on the BBC. "He has kept his cool, knows the club and has given the players the support they needed."

"They are playing with more quality and cohesion, and look a very strong collective. Why change?"
