Newly appointed Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has called on his forwards to up their goalscoring output.

He acknowledged the raw attacking talent at his disposal, but promised his goalscorers will improve alongside the rest of the squad.

Speaking ahead of his first match at Old Trafford, a Europa League tie against Bodo Glimt, he said: “We will try to improve as a team, and Rasmus [Hojlund], Josh [Zirkzee], and [Marcus Rashford] will score more goals, even Bruno has to score more goals.

“Amad has to be better near the goal. All these guys need to improve and we can score so many goals. We can score more goals.

“There is a concern in that, but I think we have to improve as a team because we have quality players that can score so many goals.”

The lack of attacking cutting edge was on show in Amorim’s first match in charge, which ended honours even as the Red Devils drew 1-1 away to Ipswich Town, Rashford’s early goal cancelled out by Omari Hutchinson’s second-half rocket.

Reflecting on his debut, he said: “You can feel it in the second half [against Ipswich], we controlled possession of the ball but we were not dangerous.”

Amorim singled out Rashford in particular and committed to helping him find his best position. Asked what he will do to help the United academy graduate find form, though, he told reporters that Rashford himself must be the one to initiate the change.

“I will try to help him. That position is not the best one for him. We have high pressure, it waslike fighting two giants. We will try to find the right solution for him, as for the other players.

“He has to be Marcus first of all, to try to return to that moment, and then he will have the help of all the staff, all the club, all the fans, because he is a Manchester United boy, but he has to be the first one to really want it.”
