Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has defended his decision to leave Kobbie Mainoo (20) out of the starting line-up, insisting he will only pick the midfielder when he feels it is right for the team.

Mainoo is yet to start a Premier League game this season and stayed on the bench during Thursday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham. Amorim faced repeated questions about the England international in a tense press conference before Monday’s trip to Wolves.

Amorim said he understood concerns that Mainoo could become frustrated, but stressed that selection was based purely on performance and balance. “I just want to win,” he said. “I put the best players on the pitch. It doesn’t matter who they are.”

He pointed to competition in midfield, with Bruno Fernandes ever-present and Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte also featuring. When asked if injuries or AFCON absences might open the door for Mainoo, Amorim replied: “I don’t know. If it’s the best thing for the team, I will play him.”

The United boss also pushed back at suggestions he lacks faith in academy players, highlighting the difficulty of finding minutes in key positions. “I try to put the most prepared players on the pitch,” he said.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised Mainoo’s lack of game time, saying the youngster risks being “ruined” on the bench.

Mainoo’s future is increasingly a talking point, particularly after Alejandro Garnacho’s departure earlier this year. Amorim’s firm stance leaves the midfielder waiting for an opportunity, and adds further pressure as United struggle for consistency.
